Creating Hunger Solutions for Texas Children

The Child Hunger Action Team is working to solve child hunger in a variety of ways.

School Breakfast

The Child Hunger Action Team advocated for adoption of  a universal breakfast policy in the Dallas Independent School District. DISD has made a pivotal shift to increase breakfast participation for all 161,000 district students. In just three years, 30,000 more students are eating breakfast daily at schools across the district. School breakfast provides critical nutrition to many students in a district where about 90 percent qualify for free or reduced-price school meals.

In 2012, the DISD Board of Trustees unanimously passed a policy to implement breakfast in the classroom for the entire district. By the end of 2013, all elementary schools were serving breakfast in the classroom. In 2014, breakfast in the classroom was expanded to all middle schools and, by the end of this year, every high school in the district will have implemented the program.

After School Supper Program

The DISD Afterschool Meals program has expanded from 28 participating schools in 2013-2014 to 176 participating schools in 2014-2015. The Child Hunger Action Team played a key role in supporting DISD Food and Child Nutrition Services in accomplishing this exciting expansion. Hundreds of thousands more meals are being served to children due to these efforts.

More recently, the Child Hunger Action Team worked with Garland ISD Food and Nutrition Service to expand Afterschool Meals from 13 to 39 campuses, increasing access to more than 19,000 children.
